Church of São Pedro

The Baroque Church of São Pedro was built in 1528 by order of D. Pedro de Castro, Abbot of Mouçós, whose tomb it holds. In 1692, Domingos Botelho da Fonseca, a Vila Real nobleman, who also lies here, had the chancel covered in tiles. In 1711, the church underwent restoration. Particularly notable are the rich carvings and the panelled ceiling. It stands in the centre of a beautiful square to which it gives its name - Largo de S. Pedro, in the heart of the city.
