Quinta dos Varais

It was in the 1980s that the sales of table wine began, the white having been the first to be marketed. From the Malvasias Fina, Viosinho and Códega varieties, it is vinified by temperature-controlled fermentation of the skins.

As early as the 1990s, red wine from the Tourigas Nacional and Franca and Tinta Roriz varieties began to be sold, vinified in stone presses and crushed by means of barefoot treading. After malolactic fermentation, it ages in oak casks.

The current owner of QUINTA DOS VARAIS is Lúcia de Castro Girão, a descendant of a long, unbroken line of owners of various quintas in the Douro region. From the plantation of the vine shoots to the corking of the bottles, it is a long and fascinating process carried out in QUINTA DOS VARAIS under the supervision of the owner’s son, the wine producer J. Girão de Azeredo.
