Portugal’s official currency has been the euro since 1 January 1999 and it was introduced from January 2002. The coins have eight face values: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 and 2 euros. The notes are differentiated by size and colour and have the following values: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros.
